All About RSS

You’ve probably seen it listed on blogs you read or heard it bandied about as part of a web-speak conversation. But what really is RSS?

RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” — in essence it is a uniform way to publish information and content from a variety of sources - and collecting it again based on the specifications of the subscriber.

So how does it work?
Web publishers use RSS to easily create and distribute news feeds that include links, headlines, and summaries. This information is then broadcast across the web and individuals can tune in and create their own station with feeds from a variety of sources. They can read these entries on a feed reader or have it delivered via email.

How do I subscribe?
When visiting a website or blog, look for the RSS image. You can subscribe to a feed by entering the feed’s link into the reader or by clicking an RSS icon in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader checks the user’s subscribed feeds regularly for new work, downloads any updates that it finds, and provides a user interface to monitor and read the feeds.
